Theft of vehicle number plates

Theft of vehicle number plates

Dear residents,

We would like to remind you to remain vigilant following reports of vehicle number plates being stolen from parked cars.

Criminals can use stolen number plates to avoid detection when committing offences such as speeding, fuel theft, parking offences, or other criminal activity. If your number plates are stolen, you could receive fines or notices for offences you did not commit.

To help protect your vehicle:

Consider fitting anti-theft or tamper-resistant screws to your number plates.

Park in well-lit areas or secure car parks whenever possible.

If you have CCTV, video doorbells, or security lighting, ensure they are working correctly.

Regularly check that your number plates are secure and have not been tampered with.

Be cautious if you notice missing screws, damaged plates, or anyone acting suspiciously around parked vehicles.

If your number plates are stolen:

Report the theft to the police as soon as possible.

Contact the DVLA and your vehicle insurer if required.

Keep a record of the crime reference number.

If you witness suspicious activity around parked vehicles or have any relevant information, please report it via 101, online, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Thank you
